ABOUT

Social Academy organizes social activities for young adults with disabilities. Through these events, individuals strengthen their confidence and self-esteem through social participation. Social Academy improves the quality of life for young individuals and their families.

Many of the members of Social Academy graduated from special education high schools in high need areas of New York City. While for the “typical” young person, the milestone of graduating high school marks an exciting and optimistic time in one’s life, unfortunately, very often it is the complete opposite for young individuals with disabilities. Graduation is a confusing time that brings an abrupt halt to a life of purpose and interaction – friends, learning, socialization - and the future suddenly becomes very depressing and hopeless. There are limited suitable day programs or employment opportunities for young adults with disabilities to transition to. Sadly after their school years, these individuals no longer have a place to go, and very often are confined to their homes under stimulated, lonely, bored and forgotten by society. This is why we created Social Academy.

Members of Social Academy are now on our junior board and are preparing to lead Social Academy. Our goal is to have our members be employed by Social Academy.
